ALPINE CANADA ALPIN ANNOUNCES 2007 UNIVERSITY GAMES CRITERIA
CALGARY, AB (November 2nd, 2006) – Alpine Canada Alpin today announced the ski team selection criteria for the 2007 Winter University Games to be held in Turin, Italy from January 16th to January 27th, 2007.

Sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU), the Universiade takes place every two years in various cities all over the world. This year’s event features over 100 sporting events involving the following sports: Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, Biathlon, Ice Hockey, Short Track Speed Skating, Long Track Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Snowboarding, and Curling.

The ski team representing Canada at the 2007 Winter University Games will be composed of athletes evaluated on the basis of the following criteria:
  1. Athletes will be selected according to the FIS points list number 1 of season 2006-2007 and all other FIS race results occurring before December 1, 2006
  2. Athletes will be selected in accordance with their world ranking in giant slalom plus their next best discipline;
  3. Athletes will be selected in accordance with their past experience in racing in speed events
  4. Athletes will be selected in such a fashion to ensure that at least 50% of chosen males and females are currently attending a Canadian Interuniversity Sport member university
  5. Athletes will be selected in such a fashion to ensure that at least one male and one female come from the QSSF Ski Championship - the only ski championship circuit sanctioned by one of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Regional Association. QSSF will decide how they would like to select these athletes (i.e. winners of the 2005-2006 overall championship)
  6. Athletes will need a valid FIS card;
  7. Athletes will need to have participated in a minimum of two regional FIS races during the 2005-2006 season and two, or more, during the 2006-2007 season
Athletes interested in participating should apply to their Provincial Sport Organization by Nov. 24th. The official Canadian Ski Team roster will be announced in December.
