FAQ: submitted by Ed Wilton, President of the Board of Alpine Ski NS

1.) Does Alpine Canada's liability insurance cover me if I attend a non-Club event?

After consultation with ACA (Alpine Canada Alpin) it is clear that athletes that are involved in any manner (Training camps, Dryland, etc) with Freelance Coaches do so at their own risk. There is no liability insurance in place through ACA and/or ASNS. To be covered for liability insurance an athlete must be participating in a PSO or recognized Club activity. This must be managed by a PSO and/or recognized Club. In addition, the athlete must have completed all the necessary registration requirements of ACA at the time of the activity.

2.) Are coaches that conduct freelance programs cover for liability insurance?

CSCF (Canadian Ski Coaching Federation) has stated that freelance coaches that are involved in conducting Training camps, Dryland, etc. do so at their own risk. There is no liability insurance in place through CSCF, ACA and/or ASNS for freelance coaching. For coaches to be covered for liability insurance, the coach must be participating in a PSO or Club sanctioned activity, that is managed by a PSO and/or recognized by a Club. All coaches must operate within the guidelines of ACA, CSCF, their respective PSO and the Club which they are employed by, to be covered for liability insurance. This is a quote from an CSCF office article sent to all CSCF coaches in August 2008. "It is critical to understand that this policy is NOT intended to cover business/commercial operations of members of the CSIA, CSCF, or CASI." The term policy refers to the insurance policy.

3.) If I transport athletes to events and I receive compensation is my insurance violated?

When anyone transports athletes and are then reimbursed, it is very important the only monies equal the amount of gas used are paid. If you receive more than the actual cost of gas, you maybe in violation of your automobile insurance policy, as you could become classified as a commercial driver. Everyone that does this should contact their insurance agent and advise them of your intentions and have it added to your file just to be safe. Having it added to your file could make the difference if I an accident happened.
