Nova Scotia Alpine Ski Team Named for Canada Games
Jan 18-2006
No snow? No problem. Nova Scotia's alpine ski team has had to be creative, but ten athletes are ready to head for the hills in Whitehorse, Yukon, at the 2007 Canada Winter Games from Feb. 23 to March 10.
A summer training trip to Switzerland, and various races in Quebec and Alberta have helped the team prepare. They will compete this weekend in Martock, Nova Scotia, and in upcoming races in Ontario, leading up to the Games.
Coached by Carl Beaudoin of Dartmouth and Emily Boudreau of Halifax, and managed by Julie Ann Wilton of Bedford, each athlete will compete in Super G, Giant Slalom, and Slalom events at the Canada Winter Games. The final team is as follows:
James Boudreau, Halifax
Emily Burns, Upper Falmouth
Catherine Hart, Halifax
Nicola Hughes, Halifax
Colin MacPherson, Big Pond, Cape Breton
Garrett McLeod, Wolfville
Jeffrey Oland, Halifax
Lydia Stevens, Chester
Natalie Vincent, Porters Lake
Brendan Wilton, Bedford
Team Alternates:
Lauren Steeves,Fall River
Jarek Strecko St Margaret's Bay
The alpine ski team was picked a year in advance of the Games, which allowed for an extended preparatory program, including extensive individualized dryland training programs, as well as mental preparation.
Emily Boudreau is one of two apprentice coaches on Team Nova Scotia, selected as a participant in the Women in Coaching Apprenticeship Program, co-sponsored by the Coaching Association of Canada and Nova Scotia Health Promotion and Protection.
Team Nova Scotia 2007 has 290 members - 213 athletes, 36 coaches, 23 managers, three artists and 15 mission staff. See the
team's website for the latest information on Team Nova Scotia.
The Canada Games is the country's largest amateur multi-sport event. More than 3,600 athletes, coaches and managers will gather in Whitehorse to compete for a total of 1,122 medals in 22 sports.
